Zirconium-90 Information

Zirconium is a grey-white metallic transition element. It is used in nuclear reactors for as Neutron absorber (in particular the isotope Zr-88 has this property). Zirconium was discovered by Martin Klaproth in 1789, and it was isolated by Berzelius in 1824. Zirconium has 33 isotopes. 5 of them are naturally occurring, 4 of which are stable.

Zirconium is used in alloys such as zircaloy which is used in nuclear applications since it does not readily absorb neutrons. Also baddeleyite is used in lab crucibles. It is used in high-performance pumps and valves. Clear zircon (ZrSiO4) is a popular gemstone.
