Lanthanum-139 Information

Lanthanum is a silvery metallic element belonging to group 3 of the periodic table and oft considered to be one of the lanthanoids. It is found in some rare-earth minerals. 39 isotopes of lanthanum exist. There are 2 natural isotopes of lanthanum. One of them La-139 is stable and another one La-138 has a half-life of 10^10 to 10^15 years. It resembles the lanthanoids chemically. This element has a low to moderate level of toxicity, and should be handled with care. Lanthanum was discovered by C.G. Mosander in 1839.

Lanthanum is used in the electrodes of high-intensity, carbon-arc lights. Also it is used in the production of high-grade europium metal. Because this element gives glass refractive properties, it is used in expensive camera lenses.
